About the GED

Enrollment

Students who enroll in our program must be over sixteen years of age and not attending public school. If you are under nineteen, you must have a letter from the last school attended stating the drop-out date.

To enroll, you must make an appointment for Orientation and Assessment. During the orientation, you will be given an overview of how the program works and what you must do in order to attain your goals.

Assessments

The assessments given in reading, mathematics, language and spelling will reveal your strengths and weaknesses. This information will be used to place you in the proper study materials. You will have a "prescription" written in the front of your folder, which tells you exactly what to study. You will be assigned work that can be done out of books and work that can be done on computers. We also have one-on-one lessons and group lessons. Each time you come in, you will work on a variety of lessons. A record of everything you do will be recorded by you on a "daily log." You will check your own work. You must make progress in order to stay in the program.

Attendance

The attendance requirement is a minimum of nine hours per week. You may attend as many hours as your time permits, and you may set your own schedule. We are open 28 hours a week. We open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (3:00 p.m. during June, July, and part of August). Students do not attend school on Friday.

About the GED

We have a variety of students. Some are GED students, but we also teach basic education as a refresher for those who may be going into higher education programs or preparing for some other kind of test, such as the ASVAB to get into the military.

WE DO NOT GIVE THE GED TEST.

It is given at the Career Tech Center, 1035 Norway Avenue; Huntington, WV, and other sites outside of Cabell County.

A Final Note

The reason this Learning Center exists is so that adults will have a place where they may study and learn, so they can successfully move on to their next goal in life. The teachers are here to assist you, but you are the one who must put forth the effort to study and learn the things you need in order to reach your goal. The key word here is STUDY; you must study!
